North Carolina / South Carolina Fishing A great variety of fish abound off the coast of South Carolina with both shallow and deep water fishing. South Carolinas prized state fish is the Redfish which is commonly referred to as Red Drum, Puppy Drum, Channel Bass or Spot-tail Bass. The red fish can be caught by the avid fly fisherman or spin caster when the reds move in to the shallow water. Other commonly taken fish include Spanish Mackerel, Flounder, Bluefish, King Mackerel, Bonito and Jack Crevalle. For some fun light gear action try Fly Fishing or Spin casting for the fast moving Bonito. In the Spring during April and May most of these speedsters are close within 3 miles of shore. These areas have always had some of the most fertile waters in the world. The protection of the outer banks, numerous estuaries and sounds, and the nutrient rich waters of the Gulf Stream all come together in just the right way to make the Carolina's a true fisherman's paradise. Northeast Of course as you head North you are looking at seasonal fishing, but Spring through Fall offers some great fishing in the Northeast. Maine and New England Maine and the rest of the New England area is well known for its back country fresh water fishing of Smallmouth, Trout and Salmon but the offshore cold water fishing rocks. You want to catch big fish? How about 500 lb to 800 lb Bluefin Tuna? There is some good eating Halibut and Cod to be had and the excitement of fly fishing for Silver Salmon. Other good fishing off the shores of Maine include Stripers, Redfish, Haddock, and you can chase a few Shark if your interested. Don't forget to sink your teeth into some famous Maine Lobster or New England clam chowder while your there.
Chesapeake Bay Area You'll find great fishing and charter services in both the upper and lower Chesapeake Bay of Virginia and Maryland. Full and half day boats are available in most areas. Even though you normally think of fishing the Chesapeake in the Spring, Summer and Fall, Winter fishing is also available for Striped bass and other rock fish. The fisheries include the striped bass, red and black drum, cobia, flounder, spot, croaker, bluefish and trout. You can also engage in some wreck fishing for spadefish and sheepshead.
