In the United States, the term "Gulf Coast" usually refers to the continuous portion of the coast running from Cape Sable, Florida, to Brownsville, Texas. To the south and west it is bordered by Mexico. The Gulf offers a great variety of Saltwater fishing and some great hospitality. Here is what you will usually run into off the Coast of Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. From January to March you will find the predominate fishing to be Yellow and Black Fin Tuna, Wahoo, Grouper and Mako Sharks. From April to August just hang on to your hat. You'll find that the Gulf region will offer up Yellow and Black Fin Tuna, Wahoo, Red Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), White and Blue Marlin, Grouper, Amberjack, Cobia and King Mackerel. Summer months produce a whole variety of different species to fish for. This is the all around best time of the year to fish. The weather is usually very mild and the Gulf of Mexico is calm. From September to December you'll find mostly Yellow Fin Tuna, Cobia, Snapper and Wahoo. The fall months produce an amazing time to fish for Yellow Fin Tuna, especially from the Central to the east side of the Gulf. As the mullet migration moves in the big tuna are right behind. This is the time of year for unbelievable fishing for the larger Tuna. Of course August through October is also the time of year to keep an eye out for hurricanes Speckled Trout, Redfish and Cobia are the prize fish as you move to the western side of the Gulf including Texas. Other western species include; Flounder, triple tail, Greater Amberjack, Dorado, Kingfish, Jack Crevalle, and a variety of Snappers. Fly fishing for Speckled Trout in the winter can be a gas. With less food to eat in the winter the trout are serious and hungry. If you live in or close to the United States the Gulf may be easy and affordable for you. There are a lot of areas to base camp out of with many 1/2 day, full day and multi-day charters. One thing we'd like to remind you about before making a trip to the Gulf, check reports on the "Red Tides". Especially, if you are fishing the Gulf side of Florida. We suggest you visit the NOAA site at http://www.csc.noaa.gov/crs/habf before making a trip or click here to learn more about the red tides.
